March 29 is now designated as Vietnam War Veterans Day and is celebrated across the country on this date. This year, DeSales University again hosted a celebration for us veterans and our families.

There was an Honor and Color Guard to open the event. About half the room was comprised of Vietnam veterans, with other military personnel also in attendance. Several veterans came with family.

Several veterans’ groups were recognized during the opening remarks.

Commander James Turner (RET) was the featured speaker and recounted his experiences during his deployment to South Vietnam. It was a chilling reminder of the dangers of serving over there. There was a lot of head nodding during his speech.

After his presentation, we had the Vietnam Veteran Recognition Pinning Ceremony, where each veteran was called to the podium to personally receive a commemorative pin honoring their service in Vietnam.

Next, we had a local chapter Leadership Award Presentation which was given to Aminata Dem, Student Veterans of America, DeSales Chapter.

After that, the local chapter awarded a scholarship to Valery Malaz. That amount will provide her with a 4-year college degree.

The closing ceremonies included a 2 Bell Ceremony. In the Navy, the ringing of two Bells signifies the end of a regular day. In this instance, it was also tolled in honor of our fallen comrades. After Two Bells, we had the playing of taps, again commemorating our fallen heroes.

At the close of all the remarks and presentations, we were treated to a buffet luncheon put out by DeSales University.

All in all, it was a memorable day spent with fellow veterans and friends.
