Tech Savvy Seniors: The Jetsons—Ahead of Their Time
The cartoon, "The Jetsons," premiered on ABC television in 1962. Surprisingly, many of the technologies the writers predicted are already a reality—and we’re only halfway there!
Hanna-Barbera created the series that was set 100 years in the future (2062) and produced only 24 episodes.
Back when everyone had black-and-white television sets, "The Jetsons" was ABC’s first color program. The show also presented a toy that looked very similar to Atari’s video game Asteroids, which wouldn’t hit the market until years later.
George’s boss, Cosmo Spacely, relaxes on a tanning bed, which wasn’t created until the 1970s. But that’s not all! The Jetsons' modern appliances included voice-activated alarm clocks, holograms, and today’s version of Apple’s Siri.
The opening credits also show people traveling to work while reading digital newspapers on hand-held video screens. And not surprisingly, the series foretold the ecological disasters that are now occurring in our current-day Earth’s oceans.
It’s pretty cool to live in a world today that was foreseen as far back as 1962. And last year, 2022 was apparently the year George Jetson was born!

Following are just a few of the technologies predicted. At the pace advancements are making, imagine how far along we’ll be when 2062 rolls around.
- 3D printed food – NASA Astronauts now ‘print’ pizza in space.
- Computer tablets – Holy ‘iPad’ Elroy!
- Drones – Elroy can be seen flying a drone-like toy in at least one episode.
- Flying cars – Likely the next evolution of the EV.
- Jetpacks – Have you ever been to an NFL halftime show?
- Robot maids – Japan is leading the revolution here, just like Rosie did.
- Robot vacuums – Anyone using a Roomba to help clean?
- Smart watches – The Apple iWatch and similar digital wrist pieces are now necessary accessory items.
- Video calls – Jane and George chatted regularly on a video monitor.
